Australia has recently joined the European Union, New Zealand and Israel in banning the sale of all cosmetic products that have been tested on animals. Animal lovers and advocates are ecstatic a new law that will see perfume, toothpaste, makeup and other cosmetic products that have been tested on animals or that have ingredients that have been tested on animals, being prohibited from sale in Australia. It is expected to come into effect in July 2017 and includes cosmetics made in Australia as well as cosmetic ingredients and products that have been tested on animals in other parts of the world.

Unfortunately existing products that have been tested on animals won’t be taken off the shelves, but the law will apply to all new products in the hope that this rule will begin to phase out the manufacture and sale of animal-tested products in the Australian marketplace. With more countries turning away from animal testing, it’s likely that this will be the final push that companies need to finally to stop this practice once and for all because they won’t be able to profit from it.

The law still allows for the responsible animal testing for medical and drug developments. However, the use of animals in cosmetics testing has become completely unnecessary and cruel especially with new technological advances, the growing demand for cruelty-free products, and the availability of more than 20,000 safe chemical ingredients to use for manufacturing.
