The  body rests and repairs during the time that we sleep and we all know that we feel a lot better when we get more than 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night, but getting a good night’s sleep is important for more than just looking and feeling rested.

A chronic lack of sleep may undo all the efforts you put into dieting or eating well as it is linked to weight gain. This is because sleep deprivation depresses production of the hormone leptin and stimulates production of the hormone ghrelin. Leptin is produced in fat cells and if we produce enough of this we feel satiated and we don’t eat more than we need. Ghrelin is a hormone that stimulates appetite and increases fat storage.

Studies show that just four days of disrupted sleep can affect the body’s ability to use insulin properly. This causes higher levels of sugar in the blood stream, increased insulin production and more fat storage. This may lead to weight gain, full blown insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes.

Sleep plays a vital role in maintaining physical health by allowing the body to heal and repair and this includes the repair of the cardiovascular system. Sleep deprivation is linked to high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, heart disease and stroke.

Lack of sleep makes us feel fatigued, grumpy, impatient and generally uninspired. It also results in problems with learning and retaining information. This is because sleeps allows the brain to remember new information learned throughout the day thanks to a process called memory consolidation. Proper sleep enhances our brain and improves problem-solving, decision-making and creativity.

Recurrent lack of sleep may lower the body’s defences and result in frequent infections and even a higher chance of cancer. This is because the immune system is dependent on proper sleep to function optimally and lack of sleep has been shown to alter the activity of the body's killer cells.

Losing sleep occasionally isn’t a big concern but a chronic lack of sleep is not only harmful for your own health, it can lead to a lack of focus that is linked to human error which can cause accidents. A general rule is to get 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night.

Encourage sleep by making the temperature in your bedroom cool, drink some organic herbal tea, get comfortable with organic cotton pyjamas and sleep on organic sheets and bedding.
