5 Ways to purify the air in your home naturally

Most people are aware of the environmental pollutants that are outside, but in our own homes we have cleaning products, furniture, clothing and electronics which emit chemicals that our body has to contend with.

As we spend most of our time indoors we can benefit from natural air purifying tips to maintain a healthy environment at home and at the office.

Limit the source

This is the simplest first step but does require some planning. Try to eliminate conventional cleaning products and body products from your home. Ban smoking inside the home and make sure to clean regularly with natural cleaning products to avoid a build up of dust and dirt.

Buy houseplants

Plants are natures  air purifiers and one of the best ways to clean the air in your house. Studies suggest that houseplants can clean the air from ammonia, formaldehyde, benzene and other toxins and that one plant per 100 square feet is ideal. The Peace Lily and Lady Palm are two of the best plants to filter toxins.

Use a Himalayan Salt Lamp

Himalayan salt lamps are made from pure Himalayan crystal salt which works to purify the air by releasing negative ions. As the salt lamp heats up it releases negative ions which attach to pollutants and allergens and clean them from the air. Himalayan salt lamps are pretty and they light up the room with a gorgeous pink glow.

Replace all candles with Beeswax Candles

Conventional paraffin wax candles are derived from petroleum and release smoke and chemicals like benzene, toluene and soot into the air. Beeswax candles on the other hand are natural and burn with no scent and hardly any smoke and burn slowly so they don’t need to be replaced often. They release negative ions and cleanse the air of toxins in the same way that a Himalayan salt lamp would.

Try Bamboo Charcoal

Bamboo charcoal is a new, easy and effective way to purify the air in your home. If you put some bamboo charcoal in permeable bags and hang them in various rooms of the house, the porous structure of the charcoal will remove bacteria, allergens, mould, pollutants, and odours from the air by trapping the particles. It also absorbs excess moisture from the air and prevents the growth of mildew and mould in your home.

Use Essential Oils

Essential oils like oregano, tea tree, peppermint, thyme, clove, eucalyptus and rosemary all have anti-microbial properties and can clean the air of viruses, bacteria, fungi and mould. To get rid of germs in your home buy an oil burner and put a few drops of one of these essential oils in it. They come with an added benefit of being insect repellents too!
