Back to School Health Tips

The summer holidays are coming to an end and we are approaching the beginning of another school year. We want our children to have the healthiest, happiest and most successful school year possible and the stress of going back to school can be significantly decreased by implementing a few practices.

Start the day with a healthy breakfast

Studies indicate that children who eat a healthy breakfast every day perform better at school than those who skip breakfast. A breakfast of organic protein sources and healthy fats will stabilise your child’s blood sugar and ensure they have enough fuel to get through a busy day. Avoid giving them sugary cereals and toast and opt for eggs, wholesome porridge or hearty smoothies instead.

Teach your children about hygiene

Germs are plentiful in the school environment and poor hygiene ensures that they spread far and wide.  Teach your children to wash their hands properly a few times per day, after going to the bathroom and after eating. They can use natural organic soap as this has been proved to be just as effective as and healthier than chemical anti-bacterial soaps. They can also avoid germs by not touching their eyes and mouth with dirty hands.

Make healthy lunches and snacks

To keep their diet on the straight and narrow, opt to make their school lunch and snacks at home and send them along in a fun lunch box. This saves money and reduces waste, while keeping your child away from unhealthy and processed school lunches and snacks. Focus on giving them organic fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and grass-fed meats and eggs. Make their lunch and snacks the night before to save time in the morning.

Supplement your child’s diet

Even if your child is eating an organic whole foods diet there are certain nutrients that they may be lacking. It is a good idea to supplement their diet with omega-3 fatty acids during the school year to help with focus, brain development and growth. A natural and organic multi vitamin and mineral will ensure they are not missing out on any nutrients and a vitamin C supplement will promote a strong immune system.

Keep them hydrated

Drinking enough liquids throughout the day is just as important as eating the right foods. Keep your children away from unhealthy sugary soft drinks and additive-laden juices and energy drinks. Instead give them plenty of pure water, herbal teas, coconut water, kombucha, and natural hand-pressed juices. Dehydration is common among kids who love running around outside and playing sport and it can cause illness and poor focus.

Set a bed time

It is so important for children to get enough sleep each night so that they can stay focused throughout the school day and maintain enough energy for sport or other activities. Children typically need 8-10 hours of sleep per night and in order to wake up for school they need to go to bed early to get enough hours in.
