Benefits of Taking a Cold Shower

The idea of a cold shower, especially in winter, is very unappealing and conjures up images of goose bumps and shivering. However, once you get used to them, cold showers can be very refreshing and come with several health benefits. In addition, taking fewer hot showers results in lower electricity usage which can save you money and benefit the environment.

Here are 6 health benefits of taking a cold shower:

Taking a cold shower sounds stressful but it actually has the opposite effect.  After you get out of the cold shower the body enters a parasympathetic state, also known as the body’s rest and relaxation mode.

While being in cold water for a prolonged period is not healthy, being immersed for a short time stimulates the circulation of both blood and lymph fluid. It also encourages blood to surround our organs which improves the exchange of waste and nutrients.

Exposure to cold water can boost the immune system by increasing the number of white blood cells that are produced by the body.

The body has two types of fat, known as white fat and brown fat. Brown fat is the healthy fat which generates heat to keep our bodies warm and burns calories in the process. Being exposed to cold temperatures encourages the conversion of white fat into brown fat and thus boosts the metabolism.

Cold water is good for the skin and hair as it encourages the pores to close so the skin and hair can retain their natural oils and give off a healthy glow.

Taking a cold shower can reduce muscle pain and stiffness as cold water inhibits the production of lactic acid and reduces inflammation in the body.

Taking a full length shower with only cold water may be intimidating for many people, but you can still get the benefits of a cold shower in only 20-30 seconds. Wash your hair and body in a hot shower and then stand under the cold water for 30 seconds to rinse off before getting out. If you need to you can start with only a few seconds and work your way up. You will be a cold shower convert in no time!

Please note that the elderly and those with a heart condition are not advised to try a cold shower. Be cautious and speak to your healthcare provider before attempting a cold shower if you are chronically ill, pregnant or elderly.
