Many people know turmeric as the orange powder that is used in curry but remains at the back of the cupboard for the rest of the time. However, this spice has been used for centuries in Eastern cooking and medicine and now scientific research is discovering the wonderful health benefits of turmeric.
The main health-giving compound found in turmeric is called curcumin, a potent anti-oxidant that is highly anti-inflammatory and has the ability to kill cancer cells. Studies have shown that curcumin can be used to successfully treat depression by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain. This is because people with depression and mental health problems typically have higher levels of chronic inflammation which can cause low levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain. Turmeric can also block the formation of beta-amyloid, the substance responsible for the plaques that cause Alzheimer’s disease.
Turmeric is best absorbed when consumed with fat because this allows it to bypass the liver and be directly absorbed into the bloodstream through the lymphatic system. Furthermore, when you consume turmeric with black pepper you increase the bioavailability of curcumin by up to 2000%.
