Natural and Organic Skincare for Teens

The tween and teen years can be very traumatic for a number of reasons, not least of which is an increase in oily skin, pimples and acne. Hormonal changes during this time can cause excess sebum (natural oil) production which results in shiny-looking skin. The excess sebum traps dirt, make-up and dead skin cells which congests the skin and causes inflammation, blackheads, whiteheads and sometimes severe acne.

At this age it is important to develop a healthy skin care routine and make lifestyle changes to balance hormones and reduce inflammation. Acne is sometimes referred to as diabetes of the skin because it is believed to be caused by the body’s inability to handle a high sugar diet. You can prevent this by avoiding refined sugars and baked goods, and eating regular meals of organic fruit and vegetables, healthy fats and grass-fed meats. Increase your intake of water to 2L per day and avoid sugary soda drinks and fruit juice.

Taking a good quality multivitamin and mineral supplement can ensure that you get enough of the nutrients required for healthy skin, like vitamin A, vitamin C, silica, niacin and vitamin K2

Exercising a few times a week doing activities that you love, like swimming, walking, yoga, horse-riding or surfing will go a long way to balancing your hormones and ensuring you get adequate vitamin D from sun exposure. Try to aim for 8 hours of good quality sleep a night by making sure your room is dark and free from noise. Sleep is required for healthy skin because that is the time that your body repairs and regenerates.

Your skin is a living breathing organ and it absorbs about 60% of what you put on it. Therefore you should be using natural and organic skin cleansing products. Avoid products with ingredients like parabens, phthalates, sodium laureth sulfate, polyethylene glycol, and propylene glycol. Chemicals like these can cause irritation and redness on the skin, and may have other toxic effects on your health.

A healthy skin care protocol involves using a cleaner, exfoliator, toner and moisturiser morning and evening, and applying a mineral-rich face mask a couple of times a week. This kind of skin hygiene will ensure you remove dirt, oil, dead skin cells, and make-up for your pores to reduce skin congestion and pimples.

Peach Face, Tree Fairy, 808 Dude and Lhami Skincare have superb lines of natural, certified organic and eco-friendly skin care products for tweens and teens.
