Why you should NOT use bug zapping devices

Bug zappers, also known as electric insect killers and insect control electrocutor traps, are popular devices that use ultraviolet light to attract insects and then electrocute them with a high voltage current. They seem to be an easy alternative to swatting insects away or coating yourself with chemical insect-repellents. However, these devices may actually do more harm than good.

Most people use outdoor bug zapping devices to kill annoying mosquitoes, but this actually doesn’t happen. The ultraviolet light that is used to attract the insects doesn’t attract the pesky mosquito at all! However, many other insects are attracted to this light including many of the beneficial ones that don’t bother us. The result is an outdoor area or home that is full of many more pests than you originally started with. In addition to this many of the pesky insects won’t get close enough to the zapper to be killed, but they’ll make a home in your garden instead.

Some other hazards of using bug zappers include:
  • Killing off thousands of beneficial insects that are necessary for a healthy ecosystem.
  • Electrocuted bugs and their insides are sprayed across long distances and may end up in nearby food or beverages.
  • They are not safe for children or pets to be around and could lead to accidental shocks.

The best ways to keep mosquitoes and other irritating bugs at bay is to use a fan to create resistance, and put screens on windows, doors and around outdoor entertaining areas.

You can also use natural mosquito and insect repellents on your skin and in your home, as outlined by this blog here.
