Detox Tips for a Healthy 2015

Now that 2015 is in full swing you may still be carrying some extra weight, feeling sluggish, bloated and run-down from the over indulgence during Christmas and New Year.

Here are some tips to detox your body and set you up for a healthier year ahead!

If you eat meat, make 2015 the year of eating only organic, grass-fed meat and dairy. In conventionally raised meat, toxins from antibiotic and hormone residues are stored in the fat. If you are buying free-range and grass-fed meat you can eat the fatty cuts of meat and reap the benefits of brain-boosting omega 3 fatty acids and saturated fats. Eating grass-fed meat also makes it less likely that you will be exposed to pathogenic bacteria because the animals are raised in a healthier and more hygienic environment.

The cleansers, cream, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, make-up and deodorant that we use each day could be making your body very toxic. Many of these products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals like phthalates and parabens. Make an effort to read labels and use natural, organic and chemical-free beauty and personal care products.

Many health problems have been linked to exposure to pesticides, fungicides and insecticides that are now so common in our food chain. Eating organic fruit and vegetables can be financially stressful unless you have the time and space to grow your own food. Luckily you can avoid ingesting some of the harmful chemical by buying organic vegetables and fruit according to the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen.
Your liver has a big job that involves storing, processing, manufacturing and detoxifying every second of the day and night. You can give it the help it needs by consuming some liver-supporting foods each day. Try to eat more ginger, beetroot, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, turmeric, garlic, dandelion greens and green tea daily

Sea vegetables like spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed are under utilised in our western diet. Studies have shown them to support detoxification by binding to radioactive waste and heavy metals, thus helping to remove them from the body. These foods are also packed with minerals which we need for our biochemical processes (e.g. detoxification) to function optimally.
