Superfood Trends to look out for in 2017

Every year there are new and exciting superfoods that become popular within and beyond the health-conscious community. These are foods that provide exceptional nutrition in small amounts and increase health and vitality.

Here are some of the new superfoods you can expect to see in 2017.

Algae

Algae are powerful superfoods that are packed with antioxidants, fatty acids, minerals, amino acids and vitamins. Many people may be familiar with certain types of green and blue-green algae, however new on the scene are micro-algae and red algae. Micro-algae are higher in antioxidants, minerals and chlorophyll than Spirulina and may also be the best source of beta carotene in the world. Red algae are unique as they have a bacon-flavour that will make you come back for more!

Black Bean Pasta

This new pasta trend is set to be a hit with the gluten-free, low-carbohydrate crowd as it is high in protein and fibre and grain-free.

Insects

Certain types of insects are a delicacy in the East but many people feel squeamish at the thought of eating them. However, they are a sustainable source of protein and nutrients and are becoming more popular as people realise how eco-friendly it is to farm them. 100g of crickets has 200% more protein than 100g of chicken breast and they require almost no water to produce.

Fermented Foods

Fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi have been popular for some time because of their flavour and wonderful health benefits. They contain beneficial bacteria which promote gut health and break down the nutrients to make them more bio-available. In 2017 expect to see more varieties of fermented foods like cauliflower, garlic, beetroot and carrots.

Watermelon Seeds

Seeds are a delicious, healthy and easy snack that can be eaten alone or added to smoothies and salads for extra flavour and texture. Most people spit out the black seeds when eating watermelon, however sprouted watermelon seeds are predicted to be the next big superfood trend. When sprouted they have a rich, smooth texture and flavour that is similar to sunflower seeds and are packed with protein, fibre and real-food nutrition.

Tigernut flour

Gluten-free and grain-free flours have been a hot topic over the last few years with the rise of gluten-free and low-carbohydrate diets. Tigernut flour, made from a small tuber, is expected to become popular and perhaps even replace almond, coconut and chickpea flour. It has a relatively neutral taste with a hint of nuttiness and is packed with calcium, fibre and iron. It is eco-friendly and affordable to grow as it grows very quickly and does not require much water to thrive.
