What Is The Best Protein Powder For You?

Protein is needed by our bodies for almost every function as it forms the building blocks of our cells, hormones and enzymes. Without sufficient protein we will have problems with immune function, metabolism, muscle growth and normal development. Protein gives us energy, keeps us alert and stops our blood sugar from dropping too quickly.

Protein powders have become a very popular and convenient way to increase amino acids in the diet. They are especially beneficial for those who are vegetarians, vegans, the elderly, the chronically ill, people under stress and those looking to gain muscle.

Protein powders are often grouped into either plant-based-protein, or animal-protein.

Plant-based protein powder is easy on the digestive system and hypoallergenic. It also comes with the wonderful health benefits attached to plants such as antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fibre. However, they are typically not “complete” proteins and do not contain all 21 amino acids.

Hemp Protein is gaining a lot of popularity due to its nutty flavour and “superfood” status. Made from hemp seeds, this protein powder is a complete protein source and is also a good source of omega 3 fatty-acid and fibre. Hemp protein is easy to digest and is very popular with vegans and vegetarians.

Pea Protein Isolate is easy to digest and promotes a feeling of satiety, thus making it a good protein powder to use post workout.  It has been shown to lower ghrelin levels, a substance produced by the stomach to stimulate feelings of hunger. This makes it ideal for weight loss. Nutra Organics provide pea protein in a range of flavours.

Rice Protein is made from sprouted rice and is a good source of both protein and carbohydrates. It is well digested and contains fibre and B vitamins. However, it is not a complete protein as it lacks some amino acids.

Plant-based protein blends are becoming a very popular as they use a range of vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds to provide the full array of amino acids in a digestible state. These ingredients are often fermented to increase their digestibility. Companies like Prana, Amazonia and Hut30 provide excellent plant protein blends.

The most popular animal based protein powder is whey protein.

Whey protein powder is a by product of the cheese making process. It is rich in all amino acids and contains immunoglobulins which may boost immunity. Whey protein can be hard to digest as it contains lactose which is an allergen for some people. For those that can digest it, it has shown to promote muscle growth and fat loss and is generally well absorbed by the body. It is important to make sure that you buy a whey protein powder that is made from organic, grass-fed dairy and does not contain additives, preservatives or artificial sweeteners.  Inca and Bare Blends provide high-quality whey protein powder.

Protein powder is versatile and can be used in smoothies, on salads, stirred into cereal, or added to baking.  However, it should be used to supplement the diet and not as a replacement for protein foods like fish, meat, beans, nuts, seeds and legumes.
