Why you should use organic sheets and bedding

Sleep plays an important role in maintaining and protecting our mental and physical health, therefore we should aim to spend about a third of our lives in our bedroom sleeping. If you live a natural lifestyle and are interested in organic food and body products then you should also be paying attention to what you sleep on because this may be the source of the most toxic chemicals you encounter.

Conventional mattresses, sheets and other bedding may do harm to our health over time because they contain a variety of toxic chemicals that off-gas into the air that you breathe while you sleep. This may include pesticides, latex, dyes and phthalates - many of which are known to be hormone disruptors, skin irritants and carcinogens that can result in increased risks for obesity, infertility and cancer.

Conventional mattresses contain polyurethane foam which is made from petroleum and emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which has been linked to health issues such as respiratory problems. This foam is then coated in toxic polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) because of their flame retardant properties.

Conventionally grown cotton is one of the most sprayed crops on earth and bedding made from it has residues of these chemicals which then make contact with your body for hours at a time. However, the problem with conventional cotton goes far beyond toxicity for the consumer. Most of the chemicals used to grow this crop are harmful to the environment as they poison the surrounding soil and plant life and make their way into the waterways where they damage wildlife and destroy ecosystems.

The fact that you will be spending so much time on your bed during your lifetime is enough reason to want to protect the health of yourself and your family. Do yourself and the environment a favour and invest in a natural mattress and bedding made from organic, biodegradable fibres like cotton or bamboo. These materials eliminate exposure to synthetic materials and chemicals that are harmful to health; and they are breathable, hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly. Babies, children and those who suffer with allergies, chemical sensitivity and respiratory problems will benefit greatly from using natural and organic mattresses and bedding.

The Australian Organic Directory lists Australian companies that supply organic mattresses, organic sheets and bedding, pure earth bamboo pillows, buckwheat husk pillows and more.
