How to treat a headache naturally

Many people experience headaches on a regular basis and are plagued by the pain, irritability, nausea, dizziness, fatigue and sluggishness that can make daily tasks difficult to do. During these situations it is easy to reach for an over the counter headache tablet which we know will kill the pain in a short time; however there are risks associated with taking painkillers too frequently. They may lead to rebound headaches, stomach ulcers, digestive problems and possible dependency.

There is nothing wrong with taking stronger medication when you’re struck by a severe headache, but if you want to reduce your intake of painkillers there are several natural remedies that can help to reduce pain.

Here are 6 natural, easy and effective solutions to help relieve headaches.

Stay Hydrated. One of the most common causes of a headache is dehydration so make sure you drink at least 6 glasses of water a day, which can include fresh fruit and vegetable juice and herbal tea.

Use Aromatherapy Oils. Peppermint and lavender essential oil have both been found to relax muscles, ease pain and relieve stress.

Consume Ginger. Ginger is a powerful root that has been used in traditional Asian medicine for centuries and is known for its ability to relieve inflammation and pain.

Take a detox bath. Frequent headaches may be a symptom of a build up of toxins in the body and a great way to relax and detox is to take a bath. You can add some Epsom salts, bicarbonate of soda, apple cider vinegar or essential oils to the water encourage the body to release toxins.

Use a Hot or Cold Compress. A tension headache responds better to heat while migraines and vascular headaches respond best to cold. Avoid extreme temperatures and don’t use a compress for more than 15-20 minutes.

Avoid Eyestrain. Spending too much time staring at a computer screen, tablet, smart phone, or even reading a book can put pressure on the eyes and result in a headache.
