Magnesium the Magic Mineral

Magnesium is one of several very important minerals that controls chemical reactions in the body and is a cofactor to hundreds of enzymes. The problem is that two out of three people are believed to be magnesium deficient and are suffering unnecessarily due to this.

There are dozens of magnesium deficiency symptoms and you only need to have one or two to be classified as magnesium deficient. Some of these symptoms include seizures, depression, asthma, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, muscle cramps, dizziness, racing heart, low blood sugar, heart disease, hair loss, digestive problems, PMS and high blood pressure.

Industrial agriculture has greatly decreased the quality of our soil and the nutrients contained in it because synthetic fertilizers are used to treat the soil instead of mineral-rich compost. The result of this is food that contains much lower levels of minerals like magnesium.

Our ancestors used to obtain magnesium from water they drank from streams and lakes which was free from pollution and rich in minerals. Nowadays we are drinking water that has been heavily treated and depleted of healthy minerals like magnesium and calcium.
People older than 50, those who eat a poor diet, those who drink a lot of alcohol and coffee, people on chronic medication or hormone replacement, those with digestive problems and people under a lot of stress are particularly at risk for magnesium deficiency and need to take steps to correct this.

The most common way we absorb magnesium is through the food we eat so it is important that we consume magnesium rich foods like pumpkin seeds, spinach, beans, fish, seeds, nuts, brown rice and dark chocolate. Opt to eat natural and organic food grown in organic soil which has not been treated with synthetic fertilisers.

Supplementing magnesium via the skin (transdermally) is actually more effective than supplementing internally. You can rub magnesium oil onto thin areas of the skin like the back of your arms and legs for easy uptake. Taking baths in warm water with a few cups of Epsom salts added to it is also a very effective way to increase magnesium in the body. Both of these forms of magnesium are cost effective.

When you bring your magnesium levels to normal via organic food and supplementation you will feel calmer, more energetic, happier and healthier.
