Mindful Nutrition


There is a constant pressure from outside sources to be thin and fit, even before we are old enough to understand. This leads to unhealthy eating habits, restrictive eating and yo-yo dieting which affects our relationship with food and can make it impossible to understand the messages coming from our body.

Mindful and intuitive eating is a no-diet and non-restrictive approach that can help you to build a sustainable lifestyle and a healthy relationship with food. It is the practice of bringing gentle, curious and non-judgmental awareness to what you eat. It involves listening to your body and paying attention to the thoughts, emotions and sensations you have around food.

Adopting a lifestyle of mindful eating has a variety of physical and mental health benefits, such as reducing binge-eating, improving self-control, feeling healthier, eating a more nutritious diet, managing weight over the long term and maintaining blood sugar levels.

You can incorporate mindful eating into your daily life by using these tips.

Choose the food you eat using all your senses and your knowledge on nutrition so that you eat food that is nourishing, enjoyable and satisfying.

Become aware of how you feel when you are eating and how certain foods make you feel. Note down when you feel bloated, tired, heavy, energetic or light and become aware of which foods make you feel your best.

Stay in the moment when you are eating and don’t use distractions like TV.

Focus on the tastes, smells, textures, temperatures and appearance of your food and become immersed in the experience.

Pay attention to your body’s signs that you are hungry, thirsty or full. This takes practice but will help you to avoid over-eating and addictive-eating.

Chew each mouthful multiple times to slow down the eating experience which gives the brain and stomach time to communicate.

Don’t feel pressure to finish your food and opt to keep the leftovers when you feel satiated.

Learning to eat mindfully takes time as we have to change years of conditioning. Don’t judge yourself and don’t give up if the transition doesn’t happen quickly, eventually eating mindfully will become second nature and you will reap the benefits.
